Oaxaca Packing List

Below you can find all the goodies you’ll need to bring for this trip, along with our pro-tips from years of traveling around the world!

How to Pack

We recommend traveling with a large backpack or a lightweight rollercase, but keep in mind there may be times when you have to walk for two to five minutes on uneven roads, cobblestones or even climbing a flight of stairs with your baggage.

Also, be sure you have a separate day pack to take on excursions!

The dry season in Oaxaca usually lasts from October through April (which is when we’ll be traveling), while the wet season roughly begins in May and ends in September.

Regardless of the season, remember to always carry a light sweater or jacket. On an average day, Oaxaca has cool mornings and late evenings, with warm afternoons.

You can find a detailed list of what to bring below.

Base Layers

  • Undergarments (8): Our general rule of thumb is to pack one more than the number of days on your trip

  • Socks (8): Non-cotton (synthetic or wool) suitable for hiking and sleeping

  • Long trousers, pants or leggings(3-4): Suitable options for hiking and for yoga

  • Long sleeve shirts (1-2): Good for the cool evenings and mornings, sleeping and enjoying the crisp mountain air

  • Pajamas

Mid Layer

  • Shorts (1-2): Could be used for hiking or walking around the city

  • Cotton shirts/t-shirts, or tank-tops (4-5): We like to wear a tank top or short-sleeve underneath a long-sleeve button up sun shirt for layering.

  • Long sleeve button up sun shirt: We like button up shirts because they offer a lot of flexibility to wear as a warm-layer or sun protection.

  • Casual but neat clothing (1-3): Think dresses, rompers, skirts, or nice pants!

Outer Layer

  • Lightweight jacket or fleece top (1)

  • Waterproof wind/rain jacket (1): We love having a waterproof rain jacket on all trips! You can use this for wind and rain/water protection as well as for an extra layer of warmth. However, we will be traveling in the dry season and are unlikely to encounter much rain.

Accessories

  • Swimsuit & swimsuit coverup

  • Sandals or flats for city walking

  • Comfortable walking/hiking shoes (1): You will be doing some intermediate hiking and city tours throughout the trip. Covered shoes can also help with warmth at night if needed.

  • Ball cap or wide brimmed hat for sun: We provide a Root ball cap, so you don’t necessarily need to bring one.

  • Sunglasses

  • Warmer hat for cooler nights

  • Buff: A buff is a very versatile accessory that helps protect you from the sun, wind, and many other elements.  It can also be used as an extra warm layer for your head & ears, a neck gaiter, a pony tail holder or headband, and a face covering for very windy days. Gear

  • Small day pack: For day hikes and exploring, will be used to carry your water bottle or hydration bladder, sunscreen, and other essentials

  • Reusable water bottle (1 Liter)

  • Headlamp/small flashlight with extra batteries
