  • Arrival: Havana, Cuba

    Upon arrival at the José Martí International Airport in Havana, a driver will be waiting to escort you to your incredible accommodations at Casa Cuarteles.

    Rooftop Welcome Party at Yarini Habana

    Tonight we will travel via bici-taxi's to Yarini's rooftop for our trip's opening welcome session followed by an interactive salsa class with the dancers from La Casa del Son before enjoying dinner overlooking Havana. 

    After our initial time together getting to know each other, we'll kick things off with refreshing welcome cocktails, setting the tone for a memorable night.

    Immerse yourself in vibrant Cuban culture as we guide you through a lively salsa dance class. Here, you’ll learn the fundamental steps and rhythms of this iconic dance, ensuring you feel the beat of Cuba right from the start.

    This interactive experience is not only about dancing but also beginning to understand Cuban culture through dance. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, our expert instructors will ensure you have a fantastic time. By the end of the night, you’ll feel ready to hit the dance floor!

    After our dance class, we invite you to enjoy a delicious welcome dinner and soak in their craft cocktail menu, traditional dishes and stunning views from the terrace. 

    Optional Nightcap in Havana

    Experience the charm of la Habana Vieja (Old Havana) under the stars with an optional nightcap, as the city's vibrant energy comes to life after dark. For those seeking to extend their evening simply let your local guide know the vibe you're looking for and they will be sure to have a recommendation!

    Located in the heart of La Habana Vieja, Casa Cuarteles reflects the owners' love for the island's culture, dances, colors, architecture and people. This love shrines through in the thoughtful details put into every aspect of your stay. Each room has been decorated by local Cuban artists and embodies both traditional island style with a touch of luxury. All the rooms are complete with their own private balcony, as well as a private bathroom and AC. Each morning, our group will enjoy a full and delicious breakfast every morning on the rooftop terrance while we get to witness the streets of La Habana Viejacome alive. At Casa Cuarteles, you'll be sure to feel right at home during your exciting stay in Cuba.

    Tucked away in the heart of Old Havana's historic district, Casa Vitrales is a boutique Bed & Breakfast that offers an immersive experience connecting guests to the city's history, architecture and culture.

    Casa Vitrales is housed in a republican building that dates back to the colonial era, and its restoration has preserved the charm of bygone times. The architecture evokes the spirit of a Havana colonial house, with a central patio, grand openings, and water tiles of varied designs.

    Each place within this unique environment has its own personality, with contrasting elements of design that add splashes of color and modernism.

    Each morning, our group will enjoy a full and delicious breakfast every morning on the rooftop terrance while we get to witness the streets of La Habana Viejacome alive. With its perfect blend of old-world charm and modern amenities, we'll soak up the best of Havana during our stay at this boutique B&B.

  • We’ll begin the morning fresh with intention setting before heading to explore La Habana Vieja!

    La Habana Vieja: Walking & Bici-taxi Tour

    Explore La Habana and all of its magic as we immerse ourselves in Cuban history, lessons from the past, and what Cubans predict and desire for the future.

    Today, we'll take you on a walking tour of the historic center, stopping at all major plazas and points of interest. Additionally, we’ll get "off the beaten path" a bit to discuss the modern-day reality in Cuba and the unique hurdles its citizens have to overcome daily in order to complete basic tasks, such as grocery shopping or repairing a common household appliance. 

    This tour provides you with a good lay of the land for independent exploration, as well as a general overview of the island’s history and current political and economic climate.

    We will also point out some of our favorite hidden gems such as shops, bars, cafés, art galleries, restaurants, and small businesses worth checking out and supporting. 

    Bici-taxis will be used to cut down on walking time when there are long stretches between destinations. We encourage you to ask your local guide questions and feel free to make special requests if there is something specific you are hoping to explore during your time in La Habana, aka "Havana".

    ¡A Jugar Dominó & Lunch!

    It wouldn’t truly be a trip to Cuba unless you find yourself sitting in a park or on a terrace, playing a round of dominó.

    More than just a game, dominó is an intrinsic part of Cuban culture. It is is played everywhere, from the streets and parks to cafes and homes, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. As you play, you'll hear stories about the game's history and how it has become a beloved and integral part of Cuban society.

    Today we will visit our friend's house for a very traditional and immersive experience with some of our local guides’ childhood friends as they share this uniquely Cuban pastime with us. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the game, our time spent playing dominó is sure to be a highlight of our trip to Cuba.

    We will also share lunch together with our hosts!

    Havana Street Art Tour with Local Artists

    Explore the vibrant and dynamic world of Cuban street art with a guided tour led by your local guide alongside local artists in Havana.

    During this immersive experience, you'll have the opportunity to meet Fichu, a passionate Cuban street artist and dear friend, who will personally share the stories behind his captivating artwork that adorns the streets of La Habana Vieja.

    Delve into the hidden symbolism and socio-political messages embedded within his murals, gaining insight into the artist's hopes and fears for the future of Cuba, as well as the struggles artists often face.

    This tour offers an unfiltered and uncensored look into Cuban art, culture, and economy, providing a deeper understanding and appreciation for Cuba's emerging generation of artists, creators, and change-makers. As you explore the colorful streets of Havana, you'll witness firsthand how these artists use their creativity to express themselves and comment on the social issues that shape their lives.

    Cocktail Class with Private Concert & Dinner with Local Musicians

    After you've tasted rum and made some Cuban cocktails you'll get to meet local musicians and hear them play during a private concert just for our group! Together you can discuss music and the arts in Cuba during this private concert with a duo of young Cuban musicians and composers.

    Cuba is home to a thriving art and music scene with everything ranging from classical musicians to contemporary artists.

    After listening to their music, we'll share dinner and discussion with a handful of local artists and learn how the arts have helped to depict themes from their country's history and culture, as well as have their voices heard surrounding current events, a task that isn't always easy or safe for all Cubans to do.

  • We will once again take time to connect in the morning, starting the day with mindful intention. 

    Private Transfer: Havana to Viñales

    Today, we’ll make the 3 hour journey from La Habana to the countryside, where we will visit Viñales Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage site, known as the heart of the tobacco and coffee-growing region of the island, Viñales is a beautiful rural area known for its kind people, stunning landscapes and agricultural production.

    On our way out of Havana, we will stop at Las Terrazas National park for hiking, ziplining, and short boat ride.

    Lunch & Organic Farm Tour

    Take in the serenity of the countryside while dining on fresh, locally grown ingredients at Finca Agroecológica El Paraíso. This meal is all farm to table, and so fresh! Expect family style, with a fresh vegetable soup to start, roasted chicken, pork, seafood, rice, beans, and salads. We’ll also get their signature non alcoholic cocktail (you can add your own rum if you wish) that is called the AntiStress! There is plenty of food to be had today, so come hungry!

    After lunch, we’ll take a short tour of the organic farm that the restaurant is located on. Here, we will discuss food production in Cuba, the cost of food on the island, and these farmer's innovative organic farming techniques behind your delicious family-style meal. 

    Donation Distribution Organization, Optional

    Today, we will be gathering all of the donations that our group brought, and begin to separate them into different piles for various families. Working with our trusted local contact in Viñales, Yeni, we will organize the supplies and she will talk to us about the communities, schools, and individuals that will be receiving the supplies. Out of respect for people’s privacy, we will not be doing a mass distribution, rather, we will allow our contacts in Cuba to handle the disbursement of the donations. They will provide us with some photos to document the drop-off, however, we will not take photos for social media purposes of this aspect of our trip but you can keep them for your personal collection and have them available to support the purpose of your trip if questioned upon return to the US. We will provide a list of possible donation items.

    Cuban Pig Roast & Farm Party

    Nothing says the Cuban countryside like a “lechón asado”, or delicious pig roast as we'd say in English.

    Tonight we'll appreciate the friendly company of the local farmers as we help to roast our very own pig, learn to make mojitos, play dominó, listen to live music, enjoy the sunset and dance the night away in true guajiro style.

    There is no official end time for the pig roast but people usually spend 3 to 4 hours soaking in the breathtaking setting and warmth of our hosts. It's also common to go out afterward and invite our hosts to join us! 

    Accommodation: Casas Particulares in Viñales

    Upon arrival to the town of Viñales, we will get you checked into your casa particular. You will need to show your passport and fill out a simple and short form upon check-in. All the casas boast a charming garden areas and front porch rocking chairs. The homes are simple but well maintained and cheerful, with welcoming hosts, AC, mini-fridges, and breakfast included. Wifi access, albeit slow, is also available. A visit to Viñales and getting to know the host families is often a highlight for our travelers, so we are so excited for you to experience classic Cuban warmth and hospitality.

  • Horseback Ride or Hike in Viñales Valley

    Depending on energy levels and interest, we’ll start the morning off with either an outdoor adventure of a light hike or horseback ride throughout Viñales Valley, guided by our wonderful local expert, Yosbel, a knowledgeable vet who will share his extensive insights into the region's flora and fauna.

    As we traverse this stunning landscape, you'll get a genuine glimpse into the lives of Cuban farmers, with breathtaking views that showcase their daily realities.

    Lunch & Tobacco Farm Tour

    Immerse yourself in the local culture as we visit a tobacco and coffee farmer's home, offering a unique opportunity to try and purchase authentic cigars while capturing an iconic photograph against the picturesque backdrop.

    During our time here, we’ll delve deeper into the intricacies of the tobacco industry and gain insights into the workings of the island's economy. This experience will foster a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in creating products and experiences for visitors, while showcasing the positive impact our presence can have on the lives of individuals within the community.

    We'll savor the distinct taste of local coffee, relish a hand-rolled Cuban cigar, and savor the refreshing notes of the canchánchara, a classic Cuban cocktail.

    A highlight of the trip for many, our visit to a local's house and farm will not only delight your taste buds but also provide an opportunity to enjoy a delightful lunch amidst the warm hospitality of the locals. Additionally, you may choose to explore a nearby cave, allowing you to see even more of the countryside.

    Dinner at 3J Bar Tapas

    Experience one of our favorite local spots in Viñales as we make our way to the beloved 3J Bar Tapas. Nestled in the heart of the town off the main road, it's the perfect place to indulge in a beautiful meal of Spanish-style tapas and delectable dishes after a full day of activity.

    Be sure not to miss the opportunity to savor their mouthwatering croquetas. Sip on delicious cocktails and catch some live local music. Come hungry, because these portions are large!

  • Cayo Jutías Beach Day

    Escape to the pristine shores as we embark on a beach adventure at Cayo Jutías!

    Today is dedicated to immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of Cuba and basking in the tranquility of the ocean water.

    Our journey takes us to the breathtaking Cayo Jutías, a scenic two-hour drive from Viñales. (Please note, this road can often be rough, so if you are prone to carsickness it's a good idea to take a Dramamine before loading up in the cars. )

    Once we arrive at Cayo Jutías, prepare to be mesmerized as you snorkel amidst vibrant marine life and marvel at the captivating coral formations beneath the crystal-clear waters.

    This is an amazing off the beaten path destination and we'll have the entire day to just enjoy the wonderful beach as well as great company.

    For lunch we’ll be enjoying a picnic right on the shores of the beach, usually consisting of fresh seafood caught that very day!

    A visit to Starfish Beach is next on the agenda, where the name truly befits the experience. This day is often a highlight for our travelers and we can't wait for you to experience the beauty of Cayo Jutiás! 

    Dinner & Sunset at La Cocinita del Medio

    Dining at La Cocinita del Medio is a special experience steeped in local charm.

    Nestled in the heart of the stunning Viñales Valley, this family-owned gem offers breathtaking sunset views over lush, verdant landscapes. As you savor authentic Cuban dishes made from fresh, local ingredients, the warm, welcoming atmosphere of this intimate restaurant makes you feel right at home.

    The panoramic vistas of rolling tobacco fields and dramatic limestone formations add to the magic of the evening. Enjoying a meal here, with the sun setting in the distance, promises an unforgettable blend of culinary delight and natural beauty.

  • Optional Hike: Stargazing & Sunrise at Los Acuáticos

    For those looking for a little morning exercise with a gorgeous reward, there is an optional 5:30 AM hike to watch the sunrise at Los Acuáticos.

    Los Acuáticos is a small community up in the mountain range of Viñales where you can enjoy an epic sunrise. This town gets its name from the nearby water pools that are said to have healing and restorative powers. This experience gets us some exercise, time in nature, and a glimpse into life in rural Cuban off the beaten path. 

    We’ll begin our moderate hike before sunrise, allowing us to appreciate the stars whose light (along with that of our headlamp's) will guide us.

    The first 30 to 40 minutes is flat and is followed by 30 minutes of a steeper incline. Upon arrival to our lookout point we will enjoy a beautiful sunrise and breakfast al fresco. 

    If you'd prefer to hang back you can hit the snooze button and enjoy breakfast at your casa particular. 

    Lunch at Lamparilla 361

    We’ll make the 3 hour drive back to Havana where we’ll Indulge in a culinary delight at Lamparilla 361, savoring a delectable lunch alongside your fellow travelers.

    Immerse yourself in the heart of Cuban cuisine as Lamparilla 361 presents a harmonious blend of traditional Cuban favorites infused with a contemporary twist. With an extensive menu boasting a rich variety of local and international flavors, you'll be treated to a gastronomic experience that tantalizes the taste buds. And don't forget to quench your thirst with their exquisite selection of cocktails, ensuring a truly satisfying and unforgettable dining experience.

    Cooking Class in La Habana Vieja

    Today we will get our hands dirty in the kitchen as we learn to prepare traditional Cuban dishes with our host Lorena and her mother.

    We'll dive into the rich culinary traditions of Cuba, as well as discuss ingredients and flavors that are present in many local dishes. We will discover recipes that have been passed down through generations, and how those recipes reflect Cuba's natural resources and cultural and ethnic diversity.

    Likewise, we will discuss food insecurity in Cuba, the cost of eating on the island and the extreme effort that many Cubans have to put into sourcing basic items. After our work in the kitchen is over, we'll gather around to the table and enjoy a family style meal with our hosts.

  • Havana Classic Car Tour

    You didn’t think you would visit La Habana and not have the chance to cruise around in a classic car, did you?

    Prepare to be awed by not only the beautiful cars but also the ingenuity of the Cuban people who have kept these cars running for more than 50 years. Out of necessity, due to embargos and lack of materials, Cubans have had to keep their cars in commission using sheer brainpower. Fortunately, Cubans are nothing if not resourceful, as you'll surely notice after just a few days on the island. This extends to vehicles and machinery of any kind. 

    During our tour, we’ll get outside of la Habana Vieja and visit a few different neighborhoods in our cars - stopping for plenty of photo ops along the way and discussing Cuban history over the past 5 centuries.

    Our tour will take us to Miramar, the Havana Forest, and across the other side of the bay, giving us a stunning view of the Havana cityscape. Be sure to be hydrated, apply sunscreen and bring a hat and sunglasses today!

    Lunch & Visit to the Recycling Project

    Entrepreneurship and inventiveness are daily challenges for Cubans, given the economic difficulties the country has faced for over 50 years. Despite these challenges, it is heartening to encounter individuals who overcome shortages and limited resources, creating projects that foster local development in even the most remote parts of the country. These efforts are like hidden gems, found where you least expect them.

    Today, we will visit the Tercer Paraíso project, an example of sustainable development in Cuba that, since 2014, has connected art with creativity to achieve unimaginable goals in this country.

    This project is primarily led by women who promote change in environmental management, working together, although from different locations. Each one contributes in her own way to recycling and environmental preservation, from producing menstrual cups to creating mugs and coffee cups from recycled bottles.

    Today, we will have the opportunity to visit one of these spaces and support local entrepreneurship and development.

    Closing Circle & Farewell Dinner at Arrecife

    It's almost time to say ¡Adios a Cuba! Tonight's Farewell Dinner takes place at a tasteful and modern restaurant that offers delicious seafood and more in a contemporary, yet cozy, atmosphere. We'll raise our glasses one last time to a week well-spent on the island. 

    La Fábrica de Arte Cubano

    Experience the wonder of La Fabrica de Arte Cubano, an art lover's dream come true. You will see everything from photography to sculptures, fashion to architecture, as well as film, live music, and much more. This mixed-medium art space contains multiple galleries, stages, dance floors, and social areas for eating and drinking, and is frequented by both locals and foreigners on a nightly basis.

    For those seeking a more relaxed experience or want a break from practicing their Salsa moves, La FAC offers quiet lounges and patios where you can take a break and enjoy the warm Cuban air. As the night progresses, live music will start at 10:30 pm, and you can dance the night away or continue to marvel at the local art.

    Don't worry about transportation either, as it will be available upon request back to your casa particular anytime between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am. We're happy to make as many trips as possible so you can enjoy your time at La FAC just as you'd like.

    Today, we'll be saying goodbye to our lovely travel community.

    Although our time in this incredibly diverse country has drawn to a close, the memories we have created will live on.

  • November is an excellent time to explore Cuba without the concern of frequent downpours.

    While technically still in the rainy season, November offers a more weather stable time to travel with the rain beginning to subside.

    Additionally, the peak tourist season in Cuba is December, so we’ll land in a sweet spot of great weather and less tourists!

    Although expect for Cuba to be humid year round!

    The average high is in the 80’s° F with an average low of 70°F.
